These all-natural Sloppy Joes make a great family-friendly dinner. Smoky Date Not Ketchup, mustard, tomato paste and a touch of extra vinegar give the sauce a unique sweet-and-savory sauce without any white sugar or corn syrup. This recipe works equally well with ground beef, turkey, chicken or veggie “meat.”

1 teaspoon canola, grapeseed or coconut oil

1 medium-sized yellow onion, finely chopped

1 large bell pepper (red, yellow, orange or green), finely chopped

1 pound ground beef (substitute ground turkey, chicken or veggie “meat”)

  1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

  1 Tablespoon apple cider vinegar

1 cup Smoky Date Not Ketchup

  1 6-ounce can tomato paste

  1/2 teaspoon ground cumin

1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper (or a few dashes of hot sauce)

1/2 teaspoon garlic salt (or 1/4 teaspoon salt plus 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder)

1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

  4 soft hamburger rolls

  *30 minutes | 4 servings

  1. Heat the oil over medium heat in a saucepan. Add the onions and bell peppers and cook, stirring often, about 5 minutes, or until softened.
  2. Add the ground beef, mustard, vinegar, Smoky Date Not Ketchup, tomato paste, cumin, cayenne, garlic salt and black pepper. Stir to combine and cook about 20 minutes, until the meat is cooked through and the flavors have mingled. Stir often to prevent the mixture from burning.
  3. Toast the hamburger rolls lightly and arrange them on plates or a platter. Spoon the Sloppy Joes mixture onto the bottom halves of the buns. Cap with the top halves and serve immediately with plenty of napkins.
  4. Serve immediately.
